and The Eufaula Pilgrimage
The Eufaula Pilgrimage is an annual tour of historic homes in Eufaula,
Alabama, home of Lake Eufaula. The tour is sponsored each year by
the Eufaula Heritage Association. Eufaula has many old homes and
structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Eufaula Heritage Association was formed in 1965 to prevent
the loss and destruction of Eufaula's historic
homes and
treasures.
The Association purchased Shorter Mansion at auction and
made it the headquarters for both the Association and the
annual Eufaula Pilgrimage.
Shorter Mansion was built in 1884 by Eli and Wylena Shorter and
was remodeled in 1906. The mansion is recognized by the
National Trust for Historic Preservation as an excellent
example of Neoclassical architecture. It also serves
as a museum honoring the six Alabama governors
from Barbour County, as well as Admiral
Thomas Moorer, a former Chairman of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Beautifully furnished with antiques, Shorter Mansion is
located in the heart of historic Eufaula and is open to
visitors
Monday through Saturday
year-round, except on
holidays.
There is an admission fee charged.
